Better Chat Tools

As part of the new chat server (which is working awesomely, many thanks to a valiant effort by Bill!), we've revamped the moderation tools. Ban lists will no longer be wiped, and there is no longer a ban list limit. We've instituted two temporary bans for moderators, and a permanent ban to remove anyone from your channel forever.

We also removed the making moderators through Edit Settings. You now can make moderators directly through chat, but clicking "Op" on the menu after you click someone's name. You can de-op someone through the same mechanism.

Thanks for sticking around through our recent chat trials; new chat features will be on the way soon now that we have this awesome platform to work from!

Justin.tv Chat 2.0

So, the moment we've all been waiting for! We've just launched a brand new chat server, hopefully you didnt notice anything except for new moderation tools (channel owners can add and remove moderators from within the chat window), better performance and RAW JUSTIN.TV POWER... Here's a section from the the FAQ for you crazy irc users:

How do I use IRC with your chat system?

1) Download a client:

* For windows: get mIRC at http://www.mirc.com/get.html

* For Mac OS X: get Colloquy at http://colloquy.info/downloads.html

2) Connect to the Justin.TV IRC server at irc.justin.tv

3) You can find your password by selecting either the "users" tab or "rooms" tab above the chat window.

4) You will need to identify with the server before you can log in:

In mIRC:

Under "Connect" enter your nickname from the site. Choose "Servers" from the list on the left. Click "Add." Enter irc.justin.tv as the IRC Server and IMPORTANT: enter your long password (that you got from the users or rooms tab) in the "Password" box. Click "Add." Click "Select." Click "Connect to server." Now you can join some rooms and chat!



In Colloquy:

Click "New" in the connections window (press command+1). Enter your nickname and irc.justin.tv into the "Chat Server" box. Click the "Details" arrow. Enter your nickname again in "Username" and your long password (that you got from the users or rooms tab) in the "Server Password" box. If you want to rejoin later, click "Remember this connection." Click "Connect" and you're in!

So the second webcam and broadcaster beta code giveaway was a great success! Chat Clarification

Thanks for your emails regarding chat rooms.

Different rooms are located on different servers, and we made a server change today that is causing site chat users to be placed in room 2 when they first join a channel. As soon as the DNS propagates both site and IRC chatters will be placed in the same room by default.

We also apologize if your ban lists were reset. We will work to preserve those lists in the event of future chat server changes.

New record for Justin.tv set with the Jonas Brothers!

The Jonas Brothers did their first of a series of weekly broadcasts today setting an all time Justin.tv record, and even more impressively, the record for concurrent live Flash streams on any system. Fans from Myspace (and everywhere else on the Internet) flocked to the site, and through a heroic effort by Emmett scaling the site everything stayed up.

The Jonas Brothers, a young band on Disney's Hollywood Records label, streamed live using their MacBook laptops and answered questions from their Justin.tv chatroom for a little over an hour. Jonas Brothers fans flocked to the site and as a result, Justin.tv broke the all time record for concurrent live flash video streams supporting close to 14,000 simultaneous viewers and 1.2 million live video sessions in under an hour.

We'd also like to point out that because we used Kyle's video server network - Python Media Server - running on top of Amazon's EC2, the entire broadcast cost about $100.

Chat is back!

We had a couple hours of spotty chat today, but we're happy to report that chat is back up and running, and working really well. In other news, AVF Live broadcast a bike race through Kyle's hometown of Kansas City today, which peaked at over 1800 concurrent viewers! Check out their awesome tour interface (with embedded Justin.tv).

Schedule changed to "Upcoming"

We've change the way broadcaster's calendars are listed on the site to an "upcoming" view of events so that it will be easier for viewers to keep tabs on what their favorite broadcasters will be up to next. We're hoping this will encourage people to add more events to their calendars; the best way to get viewers is to clue them in on when interesting stuff will be going down (I know from experience!).

Domain Privacy Services

If you share your personal website and do not have domain privacy setup, we highly recommend you check out services like Domains by Proxy or contact your domain registrar about how to keep your personal information hidden.

Some users have been experiencing trouble with people getting their phone numbers and emails via WHOIS lookups on their domain. We are working to reduce spam on the site, however in order to keep yourself from being personally targeted, you should make sure your info is not publicly displayed online.

New Justin.tv Office!

With only limited downtime, Justin.tv has completed it's second major move. This time, into an actual office! Our luxurious South of Market warehouse conversion features hardwood floors, eat-in kitchen, 30' ceilings, and an NBA Jam arcade game!

The space would remain pretty barren if it weren't for the awesome interior design skills of Norah and Jacob. Many thanks for their tireless Ikea runs.

The new office is much more spacious and there's room left for a few more programmers. Check out "Justin.tv is still hiring" for more info.

The dust is still settling and new Officecam is coming soon. In the meantime here are a few pictures.

Gizmodo broadcasts the Apple press conference!

Gizmodo broadcasted the Apple press conference at Moscone today, where Apple announced the new ipods. Thanks to Kyle's heroic scaling efforts, our custom Python Media Server scaled to over 5200 concurrent streams without blinking an eye. That's quite a few streams.
