Updated Pageview Statistics

Several of our pre-stat tracking broadcasters have asked that we add their total visits from before we started displaying Channel Views to their pages. Well, after three weeks of going through every day by hand on Statcounter and adding up pageview totals, we've finally updated all our older broadcasters with their stats. Enjoy!

Justin.tv Update: Video Improvements Coming Soon!

I just wanted to give all of you guys a quick update on what is going on behind the scenes at Justin.tv. As you can tell from officecam, we've been working double time on accommodating the new user growth that we've been experiencing on the site. Unfortunately for all my old fans this means I haven't had much time to broadcast (except for that one time I dropped my motorcycle two weeks ago), but I promise I'll be back this weekend with a broadcast from Vegas' Vegoose music festival (sponsored by AXE Vice) with iJustine!

Some broadcasters and viewers may be have been experiencing some problems with the video. We're in the process of rewriting parts of the video cluster to be much faster and much more stable, so please bear with us during the next week or two while we roll it out. If you are a broadcaster and you do experience problems with the video (lag, getting disconnected, having the broadcaster look like it is working but no video showing up on your channel, or being unable to connect) please go to the appropriate URL below and send me a bug report with the debug information that is printed. For viewers who experience problems getting video, let your broadcaster know how to file a bug report with their debug info.

Mash-It-Up: Cool JTV app by Soupnazi!

Longtime user soupnazi came out with an awesome Justin.tv mashup site: mash-it-up.com. The site allows users to watch two JTV feeds side-by-side, a long requested feature from users and broadcasters. I like side-by-side broadcasting because it allows a lot of interesting broadcaster-broadcaster interactions: games, virtual dates, interviews, and endless more possibilities. Mash-it-up is still beta, but its an awesome enough idea that I wanted to profile it now. Great job, soupnazi!

Dealer and Jspin cover the San Diego wildfires!

Justin.tv favorites Alan (Dealer) and Jspin had awesome and death-defying coverage of the San Diego wildfires yesterday and today. They both are commended for risking life and limb to bring us breaking news from the front. Apparently Alan is feeling ill from his smoke inhalation today from last night's heroic grassroots journalism. Here's come coverage:

Mooncricket Covers the Monterey Music Summit

This past weekend MoonCricket of Justin.tv/mooncricket and I went down to the Monterey Music Summit. Mooncricket filmed for most of the artists and also streamed the show live. It was a great event, so thanks to Moon and everyone who made it possible.

Acts included Cake, The Roots, Ozomatli, Michael Franti & Spear Head, and more.

Check out http://www.justin.tv/mooncricket/episodes for highlights of the event.

Here's one from Ozomatli:

Site Upgrades: Next Channel Button!

We just rolled out a weeks worth of small site tweaks and improvements. Emmett wrote a bunch of code to improve the speed of the front page (which should be significantly faster now). We also put in additional debugging and monitoring code into the broadcaster and video system, so we'll be able to make sure broadcaster uptime stays up as the site grows.

Our favorite change is the "Next Channel" button, which Jacob did a great job on. It now appears on every channel page, and lets you jump to a random broadcasting channel. Everyone in the office spent about two hours clicking it last night without getting bored, and we all discovered new content on the site that none of us had ever seen!

Justin.tv Inspired Tattoos

A lot of our broadcasters sometimes show their tattoos per viewer request. Most of them are really cool, but we think these Justin.tv inspired tattoo's take the cake, including Bradman's Mudkip which he broadcast live.

Alexa's new logo is pretty awesome, awesome enough for John to get it inked on his arm.

Do you have any Justin.tv related body art? If so, send me a picture and the story at phil@justin.tv. If not, get this tribal heart monkey stamped on your lower back. Might as well be a bullseye!

Moderate Your Chatroom With Slow Mode!

We're constantly thinking about new and better tools to help broadcasters moderate their chatrooms. And thanks to Bill putting in a ton of work this weekend, we've been able to roll out slow mode. Broadcasters can now turn Slow Mode on or off from the chat menu under the moderate button. When a channel is in Slow Mode, the broadcaster and all voiced users and moderators are able to speak normally, but everyone else is restricted to speaking only once every couple minutes (or a couple times in a row, if they haven't said anything for a long time).

Broadcasters should turn on Slow Mode whenever their chatroom is being flooded by many users to the point that it is unusable. This will help rate limit the flow of chat, and hopefully make everything a bit more understandable.

The submissions are all in and we've picked the winners. Press Filled Weekend for JTV!

This weekend saw several more press stories on Justin.tv. Michael finally got his wish and we appeared in the New York Times in Randall Stross' column. While the article mainly focused on lifecasting, and not the other types of awesome casting that are going on network ("showcasting", "foodcasting", "eventcasting", "making-up-new-wordscasting"), its always nice to read your name in print! We also were featured in a short article by Lyneka Little in the Wall Street Journal. Two major publications in one weekend, wow!

On another note, Jessica Guynn's original LA Times article got picked up by the Chicago Tribune today, and my home paper the Seattle Times last week. Have a great Monday everyone!

Younger audiences content filter now live!

At the request of many members of the Justin.tv community (and because we think it's the right thing to do!) we've built an opt-in content filter for broadcasters. Any broadcaster whose content is not appropriate for audiences of all ages should indicate so in their profile under Edit Settings. This will require users to be signed in and at least 18 years old to watch your video. Here are examples of content not appropriate for all ages:

  • Sexual discussion
  • Cursing

This is not a license to do whatever you want behind semi-closed doors. Certain content will never be allowed on Justin.tv:

  • Sex / Nudity
  • Threats
  • Release of another persons personal information
  • Extreme violence

Please choose whether or not to apply this filter to your channel responsibly. Justin.tv trusts its broadcasters and community to set the standards for what content is appropriate for which groups.

Cool Widgets for your Justin.tv Profile

The profile section on your Justin.tv channel page is your space to put whatever you want. We allow for tons of customization on your channel, and the profile section accepts HTML allowing you to embed images, links, and widgets.

Here are a few of our favorites that you might want to check out and put on your page.

maps.amung.us

The maps.amung.us widget provides a live visitor map showing geographic locations of your viewers, current and past. You can create and embed your own visitor map here: http://maps.amung.us/customize

Animoto

There are lots of popular options for slide show widgets such as Slide and RockYou. We really like Animoto though because it takes your pictures and music and creates a totally unique music video that looks great. Here's a quick one I made of the Justin.tv float at LoveFest.

ChipIn

Probably our most popular widget, ChipIn provides a good looking alternative to a simple PayPal button. It allows for your viewers to donate to a particular cause and shows your progress in a cool flash widget. Remember, if you are going to be asking for donations on your channel, be honest about where they money is going!

Here's the ChipIn embed from Alin0's channel. He's raising money so he can get a power wheelchair. Check out his channel at www.Justin.tv/alin0.

Justin.tv Highlights and Live Streams!

Yes, you can even embed Justin.tv highlights or other live streams on your profile section! This is great if you have a highlight you want to save as a welcome message, or you want to share a friend's stream or do a simulcast event. You can change the embed code so the video autoplays and starts with a particular volume too.

Last.fm

Last.fm offers a cool playlist widget displaying your last played songs. iJustine has used the widget on her page for a while.

Kyle's Little Schoolgirl Contest

Here are some of the top submissions from the Kyle as a schoolgirl Photoshop contest. Thanks to those who submitted we got a kick out of these. The winner is the first picture. You will be receiving a Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks, the kind I give away every Friday in Justin.tv/phil!

Justin.tv: Love is in the air

A great story illustrating one of the many uses of live video on Justin.tv came to us from Elijah of www.justin.tv/elijah.

Elijah, a full time student, had been interested in a girl for a while but didn't often have the opportunity to approach her because they go to different schools. So Elijah got creative and asked her to homecoming using cue cards on his live channel. She said yes and we hope they have a great time!

Justin.tv on the front page of the LA Times!

A lifelong dream of mine has finally come true: we've finally gotten Justin.tv on the front page of the LA Times! Well, I suppose that hasn't been a lifelong dream of mine, but it is pretty awesome. Check the article by Jessica Guynn out here.

Justin.tv: An Open Network

We finally opened up the network! Over the past several months we've had a lot of great success with our beta broadcaster program, with broadcasters of all types from all walks of life broadcasting on Justin.tv. We've had presidential candidates, established bands and up-and-coming artists, models, photographers, radio hosts, and more than a few former Justin.tv fans turned broadcaster themselves. All of this happened as part of the journey towards a truly open broadcaster platform, one that would allow anyone and everyone to come to the site and broadcast (and hopefully broadcast something interesting!).

After months of hard work by Kyle, Emmett, Jacob, Bill, Phil and Michael, we finally looked at the site and deemed it worthy of the general public. It took building our own custom Flash live video server and IRC chat server before we were comfortable doing it, and it a few more months than we thought, but I'm super proud to introduce the brand new Justin.tv platform, which incorporates all the ideas and features that I've been ranting about for months.

I was looking around the site this evening watching some of the broadcasters, and realized something I never thought I'd realize: it had been an hour and I was addicted to watching the broadcasters on Justin.tv. After six and a half months of being in the spotlight, I think I'll be happy to sit back for a while and be a viewer :)
