I wrote about this earlier, and I thought that it would be good to point it out again. We've gotten a few submissions but we're really needing to get some more.

Selected clips will be featured on the front page and get an awesome new badge!

All Star Moderators

The moderators of Justin.tv are the ones who are the biggest helpers to the broadcasters. They keep their chats clean, are generally friends with lots of folks and are all around there to help out. We went to you to ask you what moderators have really swept in and had the most impact around the Justin.tv Community. We gave you the voice and here are the most nominated names that have popped up. If you get a chance check out their profiles for a brand new badge that they've received letting everyone else know, the community chose them.

The Pirate Invasion

As I wrote about last week, Sept. 19th was International Talk like a Pirate day. Even with such short notice we had a couple of good submissions but these two really stood out. Sxypanda and Lalalaura619 geared up in their best Pirate duds and played along for us! Check out the videos below to see them at their best. These two will be enjoying a nice JTV T-shirt for their efforts and having the best Pirate gear ever.

Talk Market

New things are happening around Justin.tv everyday. We've recently got a new channel Talk Market. You can check out Talk Market to see live musicians from Universal and EMI or check out some of the indie products they have to showcase as well as get a chance to buy them online during the show, they also often bring in designers and inventors to talk about the items on showcase.

Great production values, live interviews and talent these are only a couple of things you can see on Talk Market.

Archive Problems

Hey guys,

EDIT: Archive problem resolved. All current broadcasts are being archived normally. Broadcasts from the last 48 will appear shortly. Thanks for your patience!

This weekend we started having some problems with how our archives are stored. Temporarily we are storing our archives on a backup system until we can resolve these issues. What this means is that some archives will not be able to be accessed until this issue is resolved. This won't effect everyone only a small number of users. We're really sorry for the inconvenience and are working hard to get this issue resolved as quickly as possible.

Archives are being stored and there shouldn't be any loss of archives, there will be a temporary problem and should be fixed soon.

Thanks

You Be the Star: Voting Time!

The time has come, people have fleshed out their ideas and below are the pitches for the shows exactly as the have been submitted to me. The top 4 show ideas will win a JTV Prize Pack and will be asked to record a pilot episode of their show for you the community to decide who the winner should be. Take a look at the pitches and vote for the number the corresponds:

#1. Fitness/Bodybuilding Show:
What kind of show do you want to host?
Fitness/bodybuilding
How often and for how long will it be on?
At least an hour every day.
Who is your audience?
Anybody who wants to be fit.
Why should your show be featured?
I love to help people get in shape and dream big when it comes to looking your best on the beach or anywhere else.

#2. "Michael & Mr. Floppy Present The Happy Go Lucky Variety Hour"
The premise will be that it will be a jtv community driven show. We will highlight channels on the show. Interview other show hosts using the picture in picture feature. Play some cool music. Be funny. Drop any interesting info we gleam from the net on movies, tv, music, and sports. With the great chat feature JTV has you have tons of viewer interaction. It will be like your favorite radio morning show, favorite Saturday morning cartoon show, and heck the best Late Night Show you could ever want.

We would broadcast daily and for at least an hour (hence the title) but maybe go way more if the audience is into it. Our audience would be all ages...8 to 80 blind, crippled, or crazy...the audience would really be the show cause it is the interaction that JTV has that makes it the most interesting. Our show should be featured because there is nothing like it on JTV, we exceed the standard age of consent in 48 states and heck even start a few other channel trends. Give us a chance!!!

#3. Featured Broadcaster:
I am proposing a once monthly show called "Featured Broadcaster" where we profile, interview and have a Q&A with a different "Featured Broadcaster" on Justin.tv. in much the same format as "Inside the Actors Studio" with James Lipton.
The end result would be a nice collection of JTV history with episodes that give a 1/2 hour or so snapshot of personalities from across the Justin.tv community.
The format would be the same for each episode - we would play a montage of different clips from the Featured Broadcaster's channel, followed by an interview using James Liptons 10 questions:
1. What is your favorite word?
2. What is your least favorite word?
3. What turns you on?
4. What turns you off?
5. What sound do you love?
6. What sound do you hate?
7. What is your favorite curse word?
8. What profession other than yours would you like to attempt?
9. What profession would you not like to do?
10. If heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the pearly gates?
After the questions, we would open up the chat for a few selected questions and then it's a wrap!

#4. Singing/Music Show:
What kind of show do you want to host? The type of show i would like to (and currently) hosting, is a singing show. I sing requests taken from the viewers on my page , or sing songs that i love to sing. I like to captivate the audience and let them enjoy a live show from thier own homes. So on a long work day on Monday, instead of dressing up and heading out for a drink, they can throw on thier slippers , hop in thier computer chair and turn my channel on. My songs range from soul, jazz, pop, rock, acoustic, indie rock, broadway, Disney songs and even some in another language. I like to communicate with the viewers to make sure they are enjoying thier stay at my channel, and i have very strong mods helping me maintain the room.
How often and for how long will it be on? I would like to do it two nights a week and hour in length.
Who is your audience? My audience base is for all ages
Why should your show be featured? My show should be feautred because, I love to sing, I love to know that the people are enjoying my channel. It's my own little stage, and I love to do it. I even get people asking me when will i be on next! I would love for more viewers to come in an have a different experience in my little room! thankyou!

#5. Family Variety Show:
im zack aka pepper778 on jtv. if i had the chance to host a show i would make it a fun interactive one that would benefit jtv with fun family entertainment. it would be be streamed out to thousands every friday at 7:30pm CDT till 10pm CDT to an audience of those who wanna have fun and mabye even with prizes. my show should be feature because it would provide fun entertainment that would reach out to the huge spectrum of jtv users. Justin.tv NEEDS a show like this! it needs to have a show that would reach out to the tweens and teens with a music trivia. it would reach out to adults with its current news segment and would reach everyone with skype call ins and emails as a part of a segment that lets the audience have THERE voice heard! its as american as apple pie and baseball! tia-marie dont you wanna see jtv grow and set even MORE amzing viewer records? then the choice is clear! i am a diehard jtv user ive been one since 2007 and i can provide a show that let everyones voice be heard lets everyone have fun and reaches out to the WHOLE jtv community! now the reason i dont have a show like this already started is i NEED a new webcam to bring jtv its well needed fun family entertainment. i can promise you one thing and that is if i win i will not only start the show but drink an entire gallon of milk on camera in less than an hour as a celbration.

thank you for considering me,

#6. Weather Show:
Here’s an Idea, a Weather Show that streams every Tuesday through Thursday on Justin.tv, this already happens on my channel, but I rarely get viewers. It would be nice to win this contest, or at least get some kind of sponsorship from Justin.tv.

#7. Mother/Daughter Show:
Why am i sending you this message?? Well.....I have read your blog about creating my own show and i wanted to tell you about my IDEA!!!! Something that just came to me!
Ok...so my MOTHER and I have created a youtube account where we post videos each week and see how much viewers it gets!!! So...my idea is that we could create a mother and daughter show with different characters! like the ones attached to this message!!
I know that it would get MANY VIEWERS!! Because how cool is it to have your MOM with you acting crazy and just having fun! Now my viewers would have to be TEENAGERS who i am certain that they will enjoy this show!! There will have to be a new show every week!
Why should we be featured??...Because we are VERY creative! Our heads are always filled with new ideas and we will make the audience laugh so hard that their lungs will give out!! hahaha And trust me my mom is hilarious!!
So with that said...
I hope you take this idea into consideration and thank you for your time!

You Be the Star: Contest Extension

As I wrote last week in the blog, JTV is hosting a contest where you the community can vote for community submitted pitches for Justin.tv featured shows. Due to popular demand, we'll be extending the deadline for this contest to 9/15/2008. Many of you have expressed a desire to have some more time to work on your pitches and come up with plans for "pilot episodes" in the case of being in the top five.

I've seen a lot of great submissions already, keep them coming! Also if you already put on a show for JTV, maybe you'd like to submit to the community for this contest as well.

Keep your creative juices flowing!

Highlight Delays.

Some highlights that have been made have not been showing up on the site. We've taken care of this, however, because of the fix that we've done the highlights need to be reprocessed. It might take a few hours for all episodes and highlights to show up, and for a bit new highlights and episodes might be slowed down.

We're really sorry for the trouble and we're hoping to have this fixed up and running smoothly as soon as possible!

Thanks guys!

Justin.TV is hiring engineers

Here's what you need to know about JTV:

- We are the largest live video site in a rapidly growing market. If you want to check them out, some of our competitors in this space are ustream.tv, livevideo.com, stickam.com, mogulus.com, live.yahoo.com and kyte.tv - more spring up almost every day to keep us on our toes.

- We are growing very quickly. Here's a graph of our daily pageviews since last October, when we opened up JTV to anyone who wanted to broadcast:
http://abstractnonsense.com/justintv-daily-pageviews-october-2007-to-september-2008.png
Our Alexa graph shows a similar story over roughly the same period of time:
http://abstractnonsense.com/justintv-alexa-2-september-2008.png
We have over 1.5 million registered users, and our doubling period is roughly 2.5 months.

- Not all the hard problems are solved, and not all the equity is gone. In fact we are dealing with some of the most challenging problems any of us have come across. The scale and speed of our growth force us to experiment with techniques and technologies only the very biggest websites ever need to use. Sometimes we find something other people have pioneered, and adapt it to fit JTV. Other times we're the pioneers, inventing new scaling solutions that we haven't seen anyone else using yet.

- We treat ourselves well. Everyone sits down to a free catered lunch together on week-days. We have a great company health plan that includes dental-care. We subsidize gym memberships and commuting costs. Our office is comfortable, naturally well-lit, and one block from SF Caltrain. You can see it here: http://www.justin.tv/officecam

- Despite treating ourselves well, we're frugal where it counts. We're working our way towards profitability quite quickly.

- The people here are smart, friendly and driven. We have MIT dropouts, robot-builders, and PhDs. We come from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You'll find us very welcoming, and you'll definitely learn a lot from the people around you.

Here's what we need to know about you:

- You know a bunch of different languages, and you're comfortable learning new ones quickly. You have strong opinions on what makes a language good, but at the end of the day you're a pragmatist and you'll use whatever it takes to get the job done.

- You know Linux. You wouldn't be uncomfortable if someone suggested you spend a few hours digging around /proc to see if you can squeeze a bit more performance out of the tcp stack.

- You know how the web works, at least from HTTP to HTML. You probably need to look up the details, but you know if you needed to, you could figure out everything from cache-control headers to why something isn't rendering properly (in Firefox at least. Only masochists know why things aren't rendering properly in IE6).

- You are available to work in San Francisco.

If you think you're a good fit, and you're excited about JTV, please contact us (jobs@justin.tv) with your answer to one of these problems: http://www.justin.tv/problems

IRC Changes

We're doing some changes to ensure higher stability on the Twisted IRC server. Over the past week we've had some issues with high bot spam and because of this, coming up this Thursday, access for IRC will be maintained through a whitelist. If you are currently using mIRC, Colloquy or xChat to access the Justin.tv IRC server this will effect you. Everyone else who only uses the web chat won't notice much.

So what does this mean for you? If you wish to continue to access the IRC server outside of webchat you will need to email us: info@justin.tv and request to be added to the whitelist and let us know why you use an IRC client (e.g. you moderate lots of rooms, et cetera).

If you are added to the whitelist you can't share your username and anyone who ends up causing spam to the IRC server may end up removed from this whitelist and unable to access the chat outside of the web interface.

Thanks

New Contest: You Be the Star

Ever thought about putting on your own show? Worried about promoting it? Just never had the motivation to do so? This might be your lucky month. If you've ever even remotely dreamed of hosting your own show here on Justin.tv, this is your chance.

We're proud to announce the launch of the "You be the Star" contest for a chance to win a full JTV prize pack with Logitech 9000 webcam and your own JTV Sponsored and promoted show. How do I start, you might ask yourself. It's easy. First thing is first, you need an idea. Part one of this contest involves you, the broadcaster coming up with your "pitch" for your show.

What kind of show do you want to host?
How often and for how long will it be on?
Who is your audience?
Why should your show be featured?

Come up with a pitch for your idea and email it to me with the subject line of "You be the star" to tia-marie@justin.tv. I'll be accepting submissions for seven days.

Now here comes the fun part: At the end of the pitch week I'll submit all of the show ideas to YOU the community. That's right, you the community is going to vote on the Top 5 pitches.

That is when part two comes in. After the top 5 pitched shows are selected by the community those shows will be given a week to design a channel page, a banner graphic for the front page and record their pilot episodes.

Then, you guessed it. Those five channels with their pilot episodes will be brought back to the community for the final round of voting. The winner will be selected to host an officially promoted Justin.tv show. You'll get front paged for your broadcasting of your show and JTV will promote out your show. You'll also win a logitech 9000, to help you make your broadcasts even better.

Top 5 pitches selected will win a JTV T-Shirt, camel pack and stickers.

So get your thinking caps ready and submit your pitches!
