Justin.tv Channel Page Switchover

Thanks for everyone's great feedback on the new Beta channel pages and redesign. Based on your suggestions, we've made a number of changes, including the new Producer Spotlight on the front page and a hide button on the Producer channel on the directory. We've also made a bunch of changes to the new chat, making it fit more lines, hide timestamps to preserve space, and compress multiple lines from the same person into one.

Starting next Monday (August 3), we'll be defaulting all channels to the new design. The old design will still be available for some time at www.justin.tv/channelname/old. For those who want to easily move their old background and colors to the new channel layout, there is an "Import your Channel" tool located here http://www.justin.tv/settings?section=channel&subsection=channel_beta.

Thanks,

Justin

Justin.tv is opening up: API, Camtweet and more

We want to make live video ubiquitous across the Web. We know there are dozens of use cases that live video would be perfect for: customer support, pay per view entertainment, remote education, collaborative gaming...the list is expanding every day. Unfortunately we can't build all of them, there are just too many.

Instead, we want to let all of you build these applications. We know how hard it is to do, so instead of asking each of you to pay for servers and bandwidth, we just released our open, free API to the public and I am extremely excited to be the first to tell you about it. That's not all though, we're also open sourcing some of the apps we've written to show off what you can do.

The API
The API itself comes in two main pieces, REST and Flash. In short, we've giving away access to several pieces of our technology and infrastructure. The REST API was built to provide information about already existing Justin.tv data and broadcasts. The Flash API includes the live player and the broadcaster, each of which are fully customizable in appearance and behavior. Finally, our chat, along with our social chat channels, is available as well.

The possibilities for live video applications are really only limited by your imagination. Want to create a custom-skinned player? You can do it. Integrate with your own service's existing profile and identity system? No problem. Think you can make a great live video search engine, if only you had access to the stream data? Now you have it. We're hoping to see all these applications, along with the ones mentioned above, and more.

The apps
We've been using the API ourselves for a couple of weeks and we've made a few applications to show what you can do. One you might recognize is Camtweet, the Twitter-integrated app we showed off at TechCrunch's Real Time Stream event a few weeks ago. Camtweet was actually built in just a few hours (thanks, Emmett) using an early version of our API. Today Camtweet is not only open for you to use, but also open sourced. You can find the code here to see how it works and even create your own Camtweet. Take it, play with it, change it, do whatever you like. We're giving it away for free.

We hope you like some of the apps we've made, and maybe even use one or two. Personally, I'm really enjoying Kevin B's Mac OSX dashboard widget.

We're not satisfied yet though, so we're also going to open source a few more apps to help get you started. Check out the applications gallery on our API wiki for info on those.

Thanks to the entire Justin.tv team that made this happen.

Updates, Bug Fixes and Tigers - Oh my!

Earlier this month, we pushed out some changes to the site, some popular and some not so much. We got a great deal of important and great feedback from the Community and we took that feedback to heart.

Something you'll notice on the front page now is a "Top Producers" section, a section that's sole intent is to feature our best Community content on our front page so that everyone coming to justin.tv can see it! Also remember that if you have an event coming up or have a clip of something interesting that had happened on your channel, let us know and we'll feature that on our front page too! It is really important for us that we're highlighting you as the community for the great things you do and are!

We're also releasing some bug fixes to some issues that community members were having with the site after the redesign and search has gotten a spruce up too!

Feel free to let us know how you feel about the changes!

Beta Chat changes based off of your feedback

Hey guys,

We have been looking at your feedback and we're going to be pushing some changes to the beta chat based off of some of your concerns about space. Here is what we're doing:

  • Multiple chat lines from the same person will be put into one block
  • Timestamps only appear on history now

Thanks for the feedback!

New header, logo and much more to come

There are some exciting changes to the features and look on Justin.tv coming up. You'll hear much more about them soon, but today we're releasing a sneak preview with a new header that you'll see on the website soon. Before it makes its way into the Justin.tv world, we wanted to show it off here and run through a few key pieces to check out.

The new header

First, along with the new header comes our new logo. We've had a good run with the Justin.tv monkey. He watched us take our first steps, grow and find our balance--but it's time to part ways and move on. Today we welcome the new Justin.tv logo and JTV favicon onto the site.

We've also added some new menus to the header to make navigating the site much easier. Networks, Headlines and Help areas are all organized them under the main dropdown menu next to the Justin.tv logo.

We've also added category navigation to the header under the Live Channels menu, so you won't need to go back to the front page to find your favorite categories.

We've got lots more improvements coming soon that the tech and design teams are hard at work on. Until then, enjoy these changes today and let us know what you think.
