Justin.tv: The iPhone App
March 22, 2010 by Evan

Get your iPhones out and fire up the App Store, today is the day. I’m really excited to tell you that our new Justin.tv iPhone app is available and in the App Store now. We’ve been working on the app for several months to get it just right, and with the help of our great alpha and beta testers we think we’re there.

Our goal at Justin.tv to is to make live video fun, easy and fast. We know, and you’ve told us, that we can’t do that without making it available wherever you are; the iPhone is the most simple, capable and popular way to do it.

From the outset, we were focused on making a full-featured app that didn’t cut any corners. For us, that means two big things. First, every channel on Justin.tv will automatically be available on the iPhone. No need for the broadcaster to use any special software or specific formats. If you have a Justin.tv channel, you’re available on the iPhone immediately. Second, every channel has chat that connects both iPhone viewers and site viewers. And it looks great, you can watch video, read and even type chat all at the same time.

We also spent a lot of time getting the small details of the app just right. We weren’t interested in making just a smaller version of the website, we wanted to make an application that took full advantage of the iPhone and felt natural to use, even if you’ve never opened the app before. This means all the familiar iPhone actions like tapping to bring up controls, landscape video, bottom tabs and swiping to delete are exactly where you’d expect. We also built in some very specific features, like a chat bubble icon on each video page that updates with numbered badges to show you how many messages have come in. When you share a video via email, you stay in the app and can quickly come back to what you were watching.

We think this is a great version 1, but it’s just that and we have a lot of updates already planned. We’ll be sending our first one to Apple later today to include push notifications to alert you when your favorite channels go live. We’re also adding broadcasting to the app, more on that as we get closer to launching it.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, please download our app here.

The App would be nice if it worked for all of your shows. I have been trying to watch 93.1 WZAK and it keeps crashing. It says network full try a different channel when there are no viewers in the room. Please fix this.
