New social features and viewer profiles!
December 21, 2007 by justin

We’ve been working really hard for the past two weeks on enhancing the site with social features that our users have been requesting for months, and are finally ready to release them today. Now, as a Justin.tv user, you can:

  • Create a customizable viewer profile
  • Add broadcasters you like to your favorites
  • Find friends on Justin.tv and be friends with them!
  • Send private messages to other users
  • See what people are watching on their profiles
  • Import your existing contacts from your web-mail account

You can get to any viewers profile by going to www.justin.tv/username/profile. Here is mine. Other viewers can friend you from your profile, and you can friend other users by finding their profiles or by clicking on them in chat.

Hope you enjoy the new features! They guys wanted to have a contest to see who in the office would get the most friends, but I’ve hacked the system so that everyone is automatically friends with Justin :)

Happy Holidays!

This new feature is opening up new horizons for me… gender neutral chat names now have pictures associated with them! (pst, did you know that manx is really the JTV monkey?!?)

I like some of the features of the profiles, hopefully it doesn’t turn out to be another MySpace style site. By the way. I found a flaw in the design. In the about me section, iframes are disabled. But if you use an object tag that is linked to an html document, you’ll get the same effect as an iframe. You may want to disable the text/html type attribute from the object tag, or the object tag alltoghether, (since you can’t <embed> an html document as far as I know)

It wasn’t clear to me whether the “you haven’t filled out our profile yet” warning is a different and separate “profile” from the one that’s on my broadcast page…so I was hesitant to start filling out the profile lest it change what I already have on my jtv page. And I admit I was a bit furious not knowing what this was and thought my previous “profile” was gone and I had to start over again..

Once again, I suggest some FAQ pages to better explain new stuff and the ins and outs and more details on changes and possible settings we can make.

Oh, and more rants…the “broadcast” page didn’t seem to be loading properly about 9:30 a.m. EST…and then when using FME2 video delay seems to be about 30 seconds or so…

But I love JTV notwithstanding!

Having trouble finding the ban or ignore in the JTV chat. Otherwise user profiles seem to cut down on the need for the latter.
